Choosing a route
New PAN or correction? Understanding the difference
A new PAN is for someone who has never had one. A correction changes details on a PAN that already exists. Here is how to tell them apart.
Quick answer
A New PAN Application is only for someone who has never been issued a PAN. If you already have a PAN and a detail is wrong or has changed, the Correction / Update route is generally the relevant one. A correction does not create a new PAN.
The short version
| Your situation | Generally relevant route |
|---|---|
| You have never been issued a PAN | New PAN Application |
| You have a PAN and your name, address or another detail has changed | PAN Correction / Update |
| You have a PAN and a detail was recorded incorrectly | PAN Correction / Update |
| You have a PAN and the card itself is missing or unusable | Lost / Damaged PAN Assistance |
Why not just apply again?
A person is generally not expected to hold more than one PAN. Applying for a new PAN to “fix” a wrong detail creates a second problem instead of solving the first. A correction or update generally keeps your existing PAN and changes the recorded details.
What changes in a correction
Common correction types include name, date of birth, parent details, address, photo and signature. The evidence and process depend on the detail being changed, and not every detail changes in the same way. CAREALL reviews your correction type and explains what generally applies.
